Computer Keyboard Shortcuts

                    Keyboard shortcuts provide an easier and faster way to navigate and execute commands in computer software. Keyboard shortcuts are usually available using the Alt key (on IBM-compatible computers), the Command key (on Apple computers), the Ctrl or Shift key in combination with another key. The de facto standard for displaying a shortcut is a list of modifier keys, plus characters, and other keys. In other words, “Ctrl + S” tells you to press and hold the Ctrl key, and then press the S key too.

You can also find keyboard shortcuts in popular programs by searching for underlined letters in their menu. For example, the image in the “File” menu has an underscore on “F” in the “File”, which means that you can press the Alt and “F” keys to access the file menu.

Some programs require the user to press and hold Alt to see underlined characters. In the image above, you see that some of the common functions, such as “Open” (Ctrl + O) and “Save” (Ctrl + S), are assigned keyboard shortcuts. When you start remembering keyboard shortcuts, you will notice that many applications share them. We have a list of the most common keyboard shortcuts on the PC.

Basic PC keyboard shortcuts:

                The following is a list of some of the most commonly used key shortcuts that work with IBM-compatible computers and software. It is highly recommended that all users keep a link to these keyboard shortcuts or try to remember them. This will greatly increase your productivity.

Tip:

In addition to the special keyboard shortcuts listed here, some are also located on the number keys (under the F1 - F12 keys). You can enter special characters by pressing the Shift key and a number key that has a special character.

Ctrl + O	Open the file in the current software
Ctrl + A	Select all text
Ctrl + B	Make Change the selected text to bold
Ctrl + I	Make Change the selected text in italics
Ctrl + U	Make Change selected text to underline
Ctrl + F	Open the search window for the current document or window
Ctrl + S	Save the current document file

Shift + Home	Selection from the current position to the beginning of the line
Shift + End	Highlights from the current position to the end of the line
Ctrl + Left	Arrow Moves one word left at a time
Ctrl + Right	Arrow Key Moves one word to the right
Ctrl + Esc	Open the Start menu
Ctrl + Shift + Esc	For Open Windows Task Manager
Alt + F4	For Close the currently active program
Alt + Enter	Open the properties for the selected thing
